You should always use the best products you can afford to paint in watercolors so you are not frustrated with inferior products. Purchase Artist quality watercolor, 100% cotton rag paper (140# Arches is a good choice.) You will also need water containers, pencil, white eraser, paper towels or cloths, palette to keep your paints on and good quality brushes (I prefer golden taklon – not too expensive but they paint well.)
No, the purpose of practicing is so you can learn about the materials you want to use as you get better. You will not learn about them if you use different materials.
Some say it is. I believe that once you have mastered watercolor, it is not more difficult than any other medium.
Yes, that is why we use good paper and paints.
I like transparent colors and primarily paint with them. Opaque watercolors have their place for certain applications.
